Putting on a dog harness - How do I do it?

We will help you to put on the dog harness without any problems.

Putting the Julius-K9® IDC® dog harness is a very simple task, despite this, unfortunately, we see many bad examples among users, and many questions arise about the topic on the Internet. (e.g. julius-k9 FAQ)

With this blog post, we want to help those owners who do not know how to put the harness on their pet.

In order for the newly purchased Julius-K9 harness to provide the expected high quality for a long time, it is important to use it correctly and adjust the straps properly before the first walk.

Each Julius-K9 harness has two straps:

  • Chest strap
  • Strap under the belly

When putting on the dog harness, the straps must be adjusted so that they are neither too loose nor too tight. If the straps are left loose, the dog can easily get out of the harness backwards, and if it is too tight, it can rub its skin. Therefore:

  1. The chest belt should be adjusted so that four fingers fit comfortably between the dog's front leg and the strap under the belly
  2. The strap under the belly is of sufficient width if we can slide our palm under the harness on the dog's back

The straps only need to be properly adjusted once, during subsequent use, the dog harness can be fastened or released with the help of the break-proof buckle on the strap under the belly.

The video above also shows how easy it is to put on and take off the dog harness.

It is an eternal question whether a harness or a collar is the right choice for walking. The AKC or the British BarkPost blog also writes at length. But during the correct use of the dog harness, thanks to the downward-pointing chest belt, the pulling force that occurs during the walk will burden the dog's chest muscles and not the neck. This is definitely an advantage for small dog breeds and older dogs. Since their trachea and larynx are more sensitive, they often cough even at the slightest tug on the neck.

In the picture sent by our client, we see a frightening example of putting on a dog harness.

Since the chest belt is not properly fastened, the dog can easily escape from the harness at any time. The Velcro part must not be attached to the place of the inscription, but folded in half to the inner surface of the belt.

The Julius-K9 harness only provides the high quality it has proven during tests when used correctly. In the case of a poorly fastened chest strap, the load is distributed improperly, and the pressure distributor pillow or the y-belt  its use is also not feasible.

In addition, there are countless better options for using the side velcro part.
